A Laakh Chanderi Shirt in charcoal and gold, built like a suit and not like a festive outfit. The shirt is a proper shirt - collar, full placket, long sleeves, buttoned cuffs - with gold sequin and moti hand embroidery falling in a scatter from the shoulders, dense at the seam and thinning out as it travels down. 

Laakh is a hundred thousand. It is also the resin that gives you the colour - the only gold in India that was ever grown rather than mined. Both readings are on the garment: too many to count, and none of it printed on.

This is the answer to the party where a shirt would be too much and a dress would be too little. It is also two garments that will not stay together - the shirt goes to work over a plain trouser, the palazzos take a black top and go out.
