A Peher chanderi co-ord set in deep maroon - a shirt cut generous through the body above, a straight skirt to the ankle below, both in one cloth so the column runs unbroken from collar to hem. A narrow band of hand embroidery, zari and moti and sequins worked together, follows the outer sleeve seam and reappears at the skirt's front slit: two lines, on the two edges that move.

A peher is three hours - the old way of cutting a day into eight, one watch at a time. This one takes four of them without being changed: the seven o'clock puja, the house that fills by nine, dinner, and the drive back. The skirt is lined in cotton and the shirt comes with its own cotton slip, so chanderi can be worn the way it is woven - thin, and lit from behind.

Maroon is not a colour a rose is. It is a colour a rose becomes: pomegranate, ember, late light, a red that has been somewhere and come back.
