Karva Chauth : What to Wear From Sargi and Office to Moonrise
Karva Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday 29 October. That's a working day. For most women who keep the fast, it means sargi before six, a full day at a desk or on calls without water, and the moon a little after eight in Delhi. Moonrise is earlier in the east and later in the west, so check your city's panchang. Most Karwa Chauth outfit guides dress you for the last forty minutes. This one dresses you for the whole day.
The short answer
- Date: Thursday 29 October 2026. Sargi before sunrise, the fast ends at moonrise.
- If you're wearing one outfit all day: a deep maroon Chanderi co-ord or kurta set. It goes to the office at nine and the puja at seven without a change.
- If you're changing at six: crimson hand block printed mul at work, then a maroon Chanderi saree for the moon.
- The colour: red, if that's your family's rule. Otherwise maroon, which still looks right under a tube light at 3 pm.
What a fasting workday asks of an outfit
By four in the afternoon, three things matter more than anything printed in a trend report. The first is the waistband. You'll want one you can forget about, which means elastic at the back or a drawstring, not a fitted zip. The second is the sleeves. In the evening you'll be holding a thali with a lit diya on it and a sieve in the other hand, so you want sleeves that stay clear of the flame. The third is the drape. The puja usually happens seated on the floor, with the karva in front of you and the women of the house around you, and the cloth has to sit well there too.
Keep those three in mind and most of the choice is made for you.
One outfit, nine to moonrise
The Peher Chanderi Co-ord Set in deep maroon (₹7,700) is built for exactly this day. It's a generous shirt over an ankle-length skirt, both cut from the same Chanderi so the colour runs unbroken from collar to hem. A narrow band of zari, moti and sequin hand embroidery follows the sleeve seams and the skirt slit, and that's all the gold there is. It looks quiet in a 10 am review and festive by diya light. The skirt is lined in cotton and comes with a cotton slip, so there's nothing to find or pin at 6:30. A peher is three hours, the old way of cutting the day into eight watches. On 29 October you'll be in it for five of them.
For a kurta set, the Abhya Chanderi Kurta Set in maroon and green (₹10,400) keeps its gold to a single line: sequin and moti hand embroidery down the full placket, returning at the neckline and both slits. Wear the kurta and pants to work. The green Chanderi dupatta, striped in gold with a scalloped edge, stays folded in your bag until the evening. Putting it on is the whole change.
Crimson at work, maroon for the moon
If your office runs to a dress code, or your evening runs to a family that expects red, split the day in two.
For the day, there are two hand block printed mul sets from Malhar. The Vaani Mul Kurta Set in crimson (₹9,000) is a 45-inch straight kurta with a V-neck, three-quarter sleeves and hand-embroidered pitta work. It comes with straight pants that are half-elasticated, with pockets on both sides, and a crimson Kota Doria dupatta with printed patchwork and handmade tassels. The Taal Mul Kurta Set in crimson (₹9,800) is shorter and sharper. The kurta is 28 inches, over wide-leg palazzos that are also half-elasticated with pockets, and the Kota Doria dupatta is a soft blue, so the red doesn't become a uniform. Mul is the lightest cotton we cut, which is the reason to choose it for a day without water.
If the day is meetings and nothing else, the Sur Mul Dress in crimson (₹4,700) is a straight 53-inch block printed mul dress with full sleeves, side slits, pockets and a little hand embroidery. It's red enough for the day and plain enough for the boardroom.
At six, change into the Gulaab Chanderi Saree in deep maroon (₹9,100, or ₹10,100 with blouse fabric). The gold sits at the edges, in a fine zari stripe along both borders and the pallu end, with hand embroidery scattered across the body. Chanderi weighs almost nothing and holds a pleat, so a drape you pin at 6:15 is still a drape when you sit down on the floor at seven.
For the evening that asks for more
Some families make Karva Chauth the biggest evening of the season, with the whole building on the terrace, the photographs and the dinner after. For that, the Syahi Chanderi Kurta Set in charcoal and maroon (₹12,500) is cut on one long diagonal, with the hem dropping to a point at each side. Two leaf-shaped panels of gold hand embroidery rise from the slits, with more bands of it at the cuffs. It comes with maroon striped tissue Chanderi pants and a maroon tissue organza dupatta. Charcoal keeps the embroidery legible in low light, which matters when the light is a diya and a phone torch.
Red, maroon, and the rule in your house
Red is the colour of Karva Chauth, and in many homes that isn't a style decision. If it's a rule in yours, the crimson mul above is true red: block printed by hand, not dyed flat. If it isn't, consider maroon. It's red that has had a long day. It sits next to marigold and brass without competing, and it keeps its colour in the photographs. It also carries straight on to Diwali, nine days later, which is where we pick the story up.
Buy the piece, not only the set
Every Chanderi set here is also sold as separate pieces, and the pieces add up to the set price. So if you already own the trousers, buy the kurta.
| Set | Pieces, bought separately | Set price |
|---|---|---|
| Peher | Shirt ₹3,600 + skirt ₹4,100 | ₹7,700 |
| Abhya | Kurta ₹4,300 + pant ₹2,400 + tissue Chanderi dupatta ₹3,700 | ₹10,400 |
The Vaani kurta (₹4,600) and the Taal kurta (₹3,700) are also sold on their own. The Peher shirt over black trousers goes back to work on Friday 30 October, and nobody will know where it was the night before.
Ordering in time for 29 October
Every piece here is made to order. Each product page gives its dispatch window, either 5–7 or 7–14 working days, and that's the line to go by.
- In India, 7–14 day pieces: order by Friday 9 October.
- In India, 5–7 day pieces: order by Thursday 15 October.
- Sarees are free size and come with or without blouse fabric. If you take the fabric, give your tailor a week.
- Outside India: allow four to six weeks door to door. That rules out 29 October, so order now for the winter wedding season instead.
Karva Chauth comes at the end of a crowded month. If you're still planning the nine nights before it, start with the Navratri 2026 colours. If you want to know why Chanderi is worth what it costs, we've written about how it's made. Everything above lives in डोर DOR and Malhar.
Frequently asked
When is Karva Chauth in 2026?
Karva Chauth 2026 is on Thursday 29 October. The fast begins with sargi before sunrise and ends at moonrise, which most panchangs give as a little after 8 pm in Delhi. Moonrise varies by city, so check a local panchang for yours.
What colour should I wear on Karva Chauth?
Red is traditional, and many families keep to it. Maroon, deep pink and gold are widely worn too. Maroon is the practical choice for a working day: it reads as festive by diya light and stays sober enough for the office.
What can I wear to the office on Karva Chauth?
Pick a kurta set or co-ord in a festive colour with the embroidery kept to the neckline or the seams, and an easy waistband. Keep the dupatta in your bag until the evening, so one outfit covers the meeting and the moonrise.
Is a co-ord set acceptable for the Karva Chauth puja?
In most homes, yes. What matters at the puja is the colour, a covered head if your family follows that, and a cloth that sits well on the floor. A Chanderi co-ord with a skirt does all three, especially with a dupatta added in the evening.
Can I order a Karva Chauth outfit from outside India?
Yes. Industale ships worldwide with duties included. Allow four to six weeks door to door for made-to-order pieces, which means 2026 orders from outside India won't arrive before 29 October.
