A peher chanderi shirt set in deep maroon - a shirt cut generous through the body above. A narrow band of hand embroidery, zari and moti and sequins worked together, follows the outer sleeve seam: two lines, on the two edges that move.

A peher is three hours - the old way of cutting a day into eight, one watch at a time. This one takes four of them without being changed: the seven o'clock puja, the house that fills by nine, dinner, and the drive back.

Maroon is not a colour a rose is. It is a colour a rose becomes: pomegranate, ember, late light, a red that has been somewhere and come back.
