A charcoal chanderi kurta set where the neckline does all the work. Gold sequin and moti hand embroidery is worked in a scalloped arc around a plain round neck and finished with drop motifs - a necklace, drawn onto the cloth, so nothing has to be found to wear with it. The cuffs carry the same band. The back opens at a keyhole with two covered buttons and one small gold motif below it, placed where only the person behind you will see it.

Kajal is made, not bought- soot caught off a lamp, cooled, and lifted out with a finger. The oldest black in the country comes from a flame, which is the correct provenance for a collection that starts with a hundred lamps being lit at once.

Under it, pants woven in a fine gold check; over it, a sheer organza dupatta broad-striped in gold tissue with tassels at the corners. Three pieces, one long evening, and a kurta that will keep working alone through the winter.
